The Stair Master

Event Date: March 3, 2015

***ATTENTION***

We understand that this is a last minute decision, however, we don't want anyone to put themselves in danger traveling to the gym. Therefore, tonight's 830 class has been cancelled. Please stay home and be safe.  Stay tuned for information on tomorrow morning's classes.

Many of us are seeking out physical activities to either challenge our fitness limits.  Some are out trying to do whatever they can to help others.  Often, these two birds are being killed by a single stone.  Lauri Spitz is one such example.  Today, I’m handing the reins over to her to show you why.

A Lauri Story

On Sunday, March the New York City Multiple Sclerosis Society held a climb to the top of Rockefeller plaza to raise money for Multiple sclerosis. My husband, Matthew, was diagnosed with MS in July 2013 just a few days after having major knee surgery and the day that my job closed. (When it rains it pours! ) Click the logo to read our whole story here (and donate to this amazing cause if you like as well!)

The climb was 66 flights to the top and I really had no idea what to expect since we don't exactly have tall buildings that I could practice running up around here.

The night before the climb, I was kind of freaking out.

Here's me on the morning of the event in front of 30Rock, still not excited and concerned about making it the whole way.

Finally, after LOTS of stretching and squats, it was time for me to line up with my wave and they lead us up to the starting floor. Just like getting on the LIE during rush hour, they sent us up one at a time. If you've ever run any race and know the craziness and excitement of crossing the starting line, this was actually the opposite of that.

Once I got a few floors up, I got a pace going and it really wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I couldn't wait to get to the top to meet my husband who texted me this view from the top.

Being a few floors from the top, I felt this amazing breeze and knew I was almost there!

And before I knew it...

I finished!

I 100%, attribute lots of squats, barbell box steps up and box jumps to training for this with out access to long flights of stairs.
