Brian has been a dedicated and passionate CrossFitter for over 3 years now. As a person whose life has revolved around athletics since early childhood, CrossFit was a classic love-at-first-sight story. Brian dedicated his life to sports from pre-school right through college, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland. Brian competed in various sports including baseball, football, cross country, and others, but spent most of his life wrestling. His career consisted of 5 years as a starting varsity wrestler for Patchogue Medford High School, earning All-League honors twice in League 1, and Section XI All-County Honors as a senior. Brian went on to wrestle for Cortland State University.
Since beginning CF, Brian has regained his competitive edge and has begun competing for Smith Point in USLA Lifeguarding competitions. In 2009 he earned an individual Gold at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in Beach Flags, and a Gold at the USLA National Championship in the 4 x 100 meter Beach Relay. In the summer of 2010, Brian became USLA National Champion both as an individual for Beach Flags, and a part of the 4 x 100m Relay team. After this performance he was selected as 1 of 6 men in the United States to represent Team USA in the 2010 Sanyo Bussan International Lifesaving Cup in Japan, earning an Silver Medal in the 100m Sprint and a Gold Medal as the anchor of the 4x100m Relay team. Brian was also recently selected to represent the United States again in New Zealand for the upcoming DHL International Surf Challenge.
In CrossFit related events, Brian has competed in various competitions, taking 3rd Place at the 2010 Northeast Hybrid Strongman Challenge, and 16th at the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Hopper Challenge in Maryland. Ian Fogarty
Director of Training
Director CFLI Kids/Teens

Ian is 24 years old and has been doing CrossFit for 3 years now. This life changing decision started in a small gym basement at SUNY Cortland with friend and fellow colleague Brian Costello, quickly realizing CrossFit is not just a workout, it’s a lifestyle. Ian earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland in 2009. This has helped Ian greatly in the development of CrossFit Long Island’s renowned Kids and Teens program.
Ian has also spent the last 8 years as a Smith Point Ocean Lifeguard. In 2010 he made his debut in the USLA National Lifeguard Competition taking 4th place in the Nation. The following year showed improvement as he came home with a Silver Medal as National Runner-Up in 2011. Him and his fellow teammate Chris Costelloe, who is also a member of CrossFit Long Island, attribute much of their success to being dedicated CrossFitters.
“The very first CF workout I ever did was “Fran.” Going 20lbs lighter then prescribed, and taking almost 3X as long as Brian did, I knew as I laid on the ground in a puddle of my own sweat, trying to catch my breath, that there was no turning back. And there wasn’t. 3 years later I couldn’t be happier coaching classes to people of all ages and backgrounds who have all had that eye-opening CrossFit experience. An experience just like mine from which they never looked back. That “Fran-like” experience. Truly amazing”.
